Weeds are Back: little people in the urban jungle in Strasbourg by Vincent Bousserez
French artist and photographer, Vincent Bousserez has created a travelling public exhibition entitled ‘Weeds Are Back’ in Strasbourg, France. The artist visited Strasbourg to let his miniature humans loose on the city’s urban jungle. “In Strasbourg, they haven’t used any pesticides in the streets since 2007,” said Vincent. “So little by little, nature took back the urban space. Wild herbs grow everywhere, sidewalks and streets are covered in flowers and weeds – and it is bigger and bigger each year. So I made my little people play in this new nature, right in the centre of the city.”

Since he first began his photographic project, which he called “Plastic Life” four years ago, Vincent has bought over 100 little people to experiment with. But he will never forget the first little plastic man he bought and still thinks fondly back to that fateful day.
“It all started when a friend of mine took me to a small and old shop, dedicated to train miniature models,” recalled Vincent. “My friend showed me the area in the shop where we could see plenty of small people. I stayed in front of the small boxes, stared at them, fell in love, and I bought one. I was thinking I would have him with me all the time, and would shoot him in different situations. But I couldn’t resist – I broke my rule, and bought another one, and another one…
“…I started to shoot them at home, on different furniture, just using the light of my window. I loved playing with the size, the perspective and the depth.” Luckily Plastic Life is self-financing – Vincent believes he has earned back all the money he’s spent buying all his plastic people from the miniature train shop through exhibiting his work in France and overseas.
